Why was Wayne Rooney dropped by Manchester United boss Sir Alex Ferguson over Christmas and New Year 2011?

Janine Self:

Rooney, along with  team-mates Jonny Evans and Darron Gibson, were all fined and suspended by Manchester United after they went out for a meal with their wives/partners on Boxing Day. United manager Sir Alex Ferguson deemed Rooney unable to train when he reported for duty the next day.

Rooney was at Old Trafford – in a  corporate box – to watch United lose 3-2 at home to Blackburn. Ferguson, not one to reveal anything he does not want to reveal, had cryptically suggested that Rooney had not trained well during the week and that he was suffering from a myriad of strains.
All three players were fined a week’s wages as well and told to report for extra training. That did not apply to Evans, who happens to be injured at the moment.
Rooney and Ferguson have clashed on several occasions. Before Christmas, MUTV ran a clip where Rooney, playing charades, was given Bend it like Beckham. You can see how he did it here..
