Why was Kasper Schmeichel sent off playing for Leicester City against Nottingham Forest in August 2011?

Schmeichel was shown a red card in the 79th minute of Leicester’s away game to Nottingham Forest on 20 August, 2011 after two controversial moments.
With Forest leading 2-0, the home side were given a penalty. As Lewis McGugan was about to take the kick, Schmeichel made a move to replace the ball and was shown a yellow card for his actions. Referee Jonathan Moss brandished the card as Schmeichel walked back to the goal, apparently unseen by the keeper.
After being beaten from the penalty spot by McGugan Schmeichel then hurled the ball away from the Leicester players and towards the touchline. Referee Moss decided to show the Danish keeper a second yellow card.
The incident probably cost Leicester the game as Forest then levelled the game at 2-2.
Schmeichel later apologised for his actions but claimed that he didn’t realise he had been shown the first yellow card. If he had, he said, he would not have thrown the ball away after the penalty. “I didn’t know I had been booked as I had my back to the ref otherwise I would never have done that,” he said on his Twitter page.
