How did Nigeria’s Obafemi Martins brother die?

Roy Skillen

Oladipupo Olarotimi Martins died on August 8th, 2011 in Lagos, Nigeria of a suspected heart attack.

Oladipupo, known as Ladi, had been forced to retire from football in 2009 because of a heart condition. After complaining of chest pains and being unable to eat for days, he was rushed to the Dorel Specialist Hospital, Ajah, Lagos on Sunday, August 7th, but died the following day of the suspected heart attack. He was 28.

Ladi didn’t reach the professional heights of his brother Obafemi, or Femi. However, he did play for AC Reggiana of Italy, FK Partizan of Serbia and Innsbrucker AC of Austria before returning to Nigeria.

It was the second death to hit the Martins family in recent years. Femi and Ladi’s mother Alhaja Sherifat Martins died in a horrific car accident in Lagos in 2008.
