During the early years of the World Cup they were the kings of South America. Then they seemed to disappear. What are the reasons behind their re-emergence at the 2010 World Cup and again at the 2011 Copa America?

George Omegba:

Three reasons immediately come to mind.

1) Diego Forlan (F): seems to age like fine wine.

2) Luiz Suarez (F): possess incredible pace and skill to unlock even the tighest defence. An accomplished player in his own right and a superstar in the making.

3) Fernando Muslera (GK): an incredibly intelligent and athletic shot-stopper. I could see him playing in a big-name club in the near future.

Uruguay has also been underlooked for their size (Pop. 3.3 million) so I feel they’ve enjoyed the benefit of surprise!
