Former Sunderland striker Asamoah Gyan has retired from representing Ghana at international level – why?

Jack Beresford:

Ghana striker Asamoah Gyan has quit international football “indefinitely” following the recent Africa Cup of Nations.
Speculation has suggested that the move may have come after Gyan missed a penalty for the Black Stars’ during their semi-final defeat to eventual surprise winners Zambia.
Since the defeat, Asamoah Gyan among others has come under criticism from fans and pundits for their failure in the competition.
Gyan has a previous history of failure from the spot for Ghana, after missing a penalty for the Black Stars at the 2010 World Cup which would have seen them defeat Uruguay and progress to the semi-finals of the tournament.
