Fabian Frei & Alexander Frei both scored for Basle tonight but are unrelated – are any players in this season’s Champions League that are related?

Fabian, born in Frauenfeld, Switzerland, and Alexander, born in Basle, are often confused as brothers. But who are the real siblings in European club’s top competition?

Jack Beresford:

There are at least three examples of brothers compete either alongside each other or potentially against each other in this season’s Champions League.

The most obvious example of this comes from CSKA Moscow who have the twin brothers Vasili and Aleksei Berezutski on their books.

Once he completes his drug ban, Manchester City will also feature the brothers Kolo and Yaya Toure.

Elsewhere, Turkish twin brothers Halil and Hamit Altintop could also feature against each other in the Champions League.

Halil Altintop currently plays for Trabzonspor whilst Hamit Altintop signed for Real Madrid this summer. At this stage, the twin brothers would need their clubs to qualify for the group stage, which is unlikely in the case of Trabzonspor.
