What is the greatest ever England goal?

I am going to go way back to England's finest hour, the 1966 World Cup and the best goal scored in the tournament by the best player in that victorious side, Bobby Charlton.

It came in the second of England's group matches, against Mexico at Wembley and was, in the context of the campaign as a whole, hugely important as it was England's first in the group stages. Alf Ramsay's side had drawn 0-0 with Uruguay in the opening match and badly needed to register a win against Mexico, no mugs at the time.

Charlton's goal came in the 37th minute and lifted the roof off a pretty tense Wembley - and not just because it put England on the way to group qualification. Even the normally restrained Kenneth Wolstenholme, commentating on the game, can't resist saying: "beauty." No England player before or since has combined, grace, balance and power to such stunning effect. Players like Beckham, Gascoigne, Barnes and others scored outstanding goals for England. Charlton scored the ones that created history.
