What did Johan Cruyff say to Edgar Davids that caused a racism storm at Ajax?

Roy Skillen:

Amazingly Cruyff said that Edgar Davids was only on the Ajax supervisory board “because he is black”.

The claim was made by Davids after a heated discussion between the pair. It seems that Cruyff has had his nose put out of joint after the appointment of Louis Van Gaal as CEO behind his back and has been hitting out at other members of the board.

“Sometimes people cross the line within the supervisory board. There have even been racist comments. I don’t want to go into details, but it’s not easy to hold this position,” said Davids who later had his claims up held by Steven ten Have.

“Unfortunately, that statement is true. Edgar has been insulted and has received shocking treatment,” Ten Have revealed.

Why where Johan Cruyff and Edgar Davids asked to leave the Ajax board?

Janine Self:

Cruyff and Davids have been asked to resign by the Ajax members’ council, along with the other Board members Steven ten Have, Paul Romer and Marjan Olfers.
There has been a bitter power struggle at board level with allegations of racism involving Dutch legend Cruyff, who is supposed to have suggested Davids was only on the board because of the colour of his skin. Cruyff denies this but there is no doubt of the animosity between the pair.
Now the members’ council have stepped in. If the five refuse to go then their future will be on the agenda at the next shareholders’ meeting on December 12th. As the members hold most of the shares, it will mean an inevitable goodbye for Cruyff and Davids and the others anyway

Why did the entire board of Ajax quit?

Jack Beresford:
The entire board of Ajax, including Johan Cruyff quit the board of Ajax following a long-running struggle for control of the club’s management and strategy
This latest twist comes after a Dutch court ruling rejected the appointment of Louis Van Gaal as CEO of Ajax.
Johan Cruyff had previously opposed Van Gaal’s appointment, arguing that the recruitment was made by the other four board members without his knowledge or consent.
As a result of this dispute, all five will now leave with the club noting they will depart “in the shortest possible term, once suitable replacements have been found that can count on broad support.”
No date has been set for this, while a shareholders meeting which was also set for later the same week has been cancelled.
Despite the move, Cruyff could still yet return following the ruling with Hennie Henrichs’ the head of the Ajax Vereniging, the body which will create the new board, proving to be an avid fan of the Dutch legend.
Meanwhile, executive Martin Sturkenboom and technical trainer Danny Blind are also set to depart the club, with the pair’s appointments linked to the arrival of Van Gaal.
